Data Platform v4.0: Unified Analytics Engine

Combining batch and streaming analytics into a single query engine for real-time insights

For years, organizations have maintained separate systems for batch analytics and stream processing — one for historical analysis and another for real-time monitoring. This architectural divide forces data teams to write the same business logic twice, maintain two sets of infrastructure, and reconcile results that sometimes disagree. With Data Platform v4.0, we are eliminating this divide by introducing a unified analytics engine that handles both batch and streaming workloads through a single query interface.

The unified engine represents the culmination of eighteen months of engineering effort. It builds on the proven reliability of our batch processing infrastructure while incorporating the low-latency capabilities that modern data-driven organizations require. The result is a system where a single SQL query can seamlessly combine historical data with events arriving in real time, producing results that are both comprehensive and current.

Unified Engine Architecture

The unified engine uses a hybrid execution model that automatically selects the optimal processing strategy based on the query and the data sources involved. Queries against historical data use columnar scan techniques optimized for throughput. Queries against streaming sources use incremental computation techniques optimized for latency. Queries that combine both — the most common case in practice — use a hybrid approach that processes historical data in bulk and merges it with streaming results in real time.

Under the hood, the engine maintains a unified query planner that understands both batch and streaming semantics. This means that windowing functions, aggregations, and joins work consistently regardless of whether the data is at rest or in motion. Data engineers no longer need to learn separate APIs or worry about semantic differences between their batch and streaming pipelines.

Query Performance

Performance benchmarks show dramatic improvements over the previous architecture. Queries that previously required running batch jobs and waiting for results can now return interactive responses by leveraging pre-computed materialized views that are continuously updated by the streaming engine. Average query latency for common analytical patterns has decreased from minutes to seconds, while data freshness has improved from hourly to sub-second.

The best data architecture is one that data consumers never have to think about. When analysts can write a single query and get accurate, fresh results without worrying about whether the data is batch or streaming, the infrastructure has done its job.

Real-Time Dashboards

The unified engine powers a new generation of real-time dashboards that combine historical trends with live data. Dashboard widgets automatically subscribe to streaming updates, refreshing their visualizations as new data arrives without requiring manual refresh or polling. This capability transforms dashboards from periodic snapshots into living views of business operations that reflect reality as it unfolds.

The dashboard framework includes built-in support for alerting based on streaming aggregations. Users can define threshold conditions directly in the dashboard interface, and the system will notify them when metrics cross defined boundaries. These alerts are evaluated continuously against the streaming data, providing response times measured in seconds rather than the minutes or hours typical of batch-based alerting systems.

Migration Path and Compatibility

Existing v3.x batch pipelines continue to work without modification. The unified engine is fully backward compatible with v3.x SQL syntax and query semantics. Teams can adopt the new streaming capabilities incrementally, starting with the dashboards and queries that benefit most from real-time data. A migration assistant tool identifies opportunities to consolidate existing batch and streaming pipelines into unified queries, prioritized by the complexity reduction each consolidation would achieve.

We are also providing extensive documentation and training materials to help data teams take full advantage of the unified engine. A series of hands-on workshops will be offered over the coming months, covering topics from basic streaming queries to advanced patterns like event-time processing, late-arriving data handling, and exactly-once semantics in distributed streaming environments.
